‘Cyberwarfare’ and the Role of Big Tech in Modern War

By: Kristian Johnson

“Those in the West – we’re not the only good people on earth – but we have a moral foundation and a philosophical, and even a theological framework, that understands notion of good.” ~ International security expert, Klon Kitchen

Our lives are becoming more dependent on and intertwined with social media and digital technology, and that carries implications for national security in an increasingly hostile world.

In the latest episode of his podcast, John Anderson explores this issue with international security and technology expert Klon Kitchen.

Kitchen unpacks the impact of technology on the American social contract and its role in contemporary warfare, including the role American ‘Big Tech’ companies have played in supporting Ukraine in their war with Putin’s Russia.

They also discuss the significant challenges presented by China’s cyberwarfare capabilities, infrastructure-based espionage, and social credit system.

Klon Kitchen is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he focuses on the intersection of national security and defence technologies and innovation. Through his research he works to understand and explain how emerging technologies are shaping modern statecraft, intelligence, and warfighting, while focusing on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, robotics, and quantum sciences.

Before joining AEI, Klon was director of the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Technology Policy and was former national security advisor to Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE).

John Anderson served as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia from 1999 to 2005. A committed Christian, John now hosts a podcast where he interviews various thought leaders from around the world on topics as varied as politics, culture, academia and faith.
