Taking the Steps

By: Lorrene McClymont

Has God ever asked you to take a step of faith? A huge step but He’s only shown you the first step to take. That step and nothing else? There’s a bit of a big picture but just a step towards it. Once you take the first step, you see the next one, and then the next one. And it’s terrifying.

Sun, sand, and surf?

This is our current life situation and as a trying to reform perfectionist and a most definitely not reformed control freak it’s a constant battle. We moved to the beach a couple of years back and I felt so sure this was our forever place. I mean, it was the beach! We live three minutes walk from sun, sand, and I would say surf, but it’s Adelaide’s western beaches so that’s not so much of a thing. We live across the road from the best coffee a girl could ask for. I was set.

About three months after we moved, I felt a definite nudge that our beach season would only be a season. I ignored it because I really didn’t want to hear it. As the months went on, the nudge got stronger, my husband and I discussed it and prayed about it and knew we would be called back to the country.

Just take the stairs, one at a time

Late last year we both felt separately not to renew our lease at the beach that the time was now. My husband, full of faith and always so ready to take the steps said let’s go. I said um, but the rental market is tough, our landlord is great, but we can’t move now we have our daughter’s wedding coming up soon, I need to see more of the staircase, etc. God said, just take the stairs one at a time.

So we informed our landlord, step one. Started packing some boxes, step two. Started planning for the new area, step three. Started looking at and applying for houses, step four. Here’s the fun part: we don’t have a house yet.

So we are currently just taking each step in the staircase as it comes, knowing that while I get the wobbles and panic slightly (ok so slightly is definitely understating things), God doesn’t. When my desire to control every detail of every step takes over, God says Be still. When I am full of panic over where the staircase leads, God reminds me that he knows so I don’t need to. I just need to take a step and then another one and then another one.
